The TES NbS team has an engaging workshop with southern African policy makers, researchers and practitioners

23 February 2022

In this workshop we heard reflections from inspiring thought leaders from research, policy and practice across southern Africa with a focus on insights from Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and South Africa.

Our list of panelists included:

  • DR IDA DJENONTIN, a researcher from the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment and the London School of Economics and Political Science.

  • MIKATEKO SITHOLE, Deputy Director of Climate Change Adaptation at the Department of Environmental Affairs in South Africa.

  • SARAH SAVORY, an holistic management consultant and educator based in Zimbabwe.

  • DR RODGERS LUBILO, the Community Outreach Director for the Frankfurt Zoological Society Zambia Programme, and Chairperson for the Community Leaders Network of Southern Africa.

After presentations and discussions, the workshop participants developed the following key messages:

  1. Equity should be central in the process of working with nature to address societal challenges no matter what terminology is used to refer to the actions and interventions.

  2. We need more practical examples of what equity does and does not look like in existing or past nature-based solution-related projects/programmes.

  3. Knowledge product needs will be very different depending on where and by whom the product will be used.
